Alumnae Library Privileges
Welcome, Alumnae!
As a graduate of Agnes Scott College you are invited to make on-site use of many of our resources and to enjoy certain borrowing privileges. The primary mission of the library is to support the information and research needs of our current students, faculty and staff. Library privileges extended to alumnae and other "guest borrowers" are intended to supplement the resources available through your own employer, school or public library.
Fee for Borrowing
While McCain Library would prefer not to charge alumnae for borrowing books, we have experienced a significant loss of library materials not returned by alumnae at a time when budgets do not adequately support replacement. Therefore, following the lead of other libraries that offer value-added privileges for a fee and after consulting with Alumnae Relations, beginning on July 1, 2011, we will institute an annual fee of $50.00 (payable by cash or check made to Agnes Scott College) for Atlanta area alumnae who would like book borrowing privileges at McCain Library. ASC alumnae may read or make notes from books inside the library, but checking them out will require the fee to be paid. The annual fee will allow a graduate of Agnes Scott College to borrow up to five books at one time.JSTOR Access at No Charge for Alumnae - Send us an email to request access
Thanks to an alumna gift supporting pilot access for 2011-2012, the well-liked, scholarly journal archive JSTOR, which offers backfiles (not the most recent issues) of core academic journals in many disciplines, is being made accessible to graduates of Agnes Scott College who request access through McCain Library. Graduates in good standing with McCain Library who email us requesting remote JSTOR access will be sent a link with which to create a My JSTOR account.Circulation
Regular circulating books and Browsing books may be checked out for three weeks. They may be renewed if another patron has not requested them. Any book will be recalled if needed by a current Agnes Scott student or faculty member or if needed for course reserves. Alumnae borrowers may check out up to five books at a time after paying an annual fee of $50 when a card is first issued or is renewed.
Media materials such as DVDs, CDs, videotapes, sound recordings and media equipment do not circulate to alumnae/guest borrowers as they are frequently needed on short notice for classes, and because in some cases they have been purchased with restrictions on use. If you have any concerns about your borrowing privileges or have a special request, please contact the Access Services Librarian at 404-471-633.
Computers/ Electronic Resources
There are two short-term use computers in the library lobby, designated for visitors. These access the library catalog, research databases and the Internet but do not offer Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, etc.). Printing from them costs five cents per page (sent behind the Circulation Desk), limited to 50 pages.
Alumnae needing to do research on a personal laptop while visiting McCain Library may request a limited time guest login to Woof Woof WiFi from a librarian, except during the last three weeks of fall or spring semester when student use of the library and wireless network takes precedence. Printing is not available wirelessly. If necessary, librarians can assist you by printing from your USB flash drive or web mail account at the Reference Desk (for five cents per page, 50 pages maximum).
With the exception of alumnae remote access to JSTOR, visitors will not be able to access library databases when off-campus. Therefore, when researching on campus, we suggest saving the full text of articles to a flash drive or a cloud-based storage system (such as Google Docs, Dropbox, etc.) Citation links or so-called 'permanent URLs'; created when researching on campus will not work from off-campus, as they require passwords/authentication not available to visitors due to licensing restrictions. Please make sure you have the article text or PDF securely saved before leaving McCain Library.
Please see our Computer Use Policy for Visitors for further information.
Guest Registration
The first time you ask to borrow books from the library as a graduate of Agnes Scott College, you will com plete a brief registration form and present a photo ID. We'll verify your alumnae status, check for any outstanding fines or billed items, accept payment of the borrower’s fee to borrow books ($50 cash or check payable to Agnes Scott College), and issue you a Guest Borrower’s Card with a barcode. We will also enter you into our patron database or update your contact details.
Reference Assistance
There is a reference librarian on duty nearly all hours the library is open. Please ask for guidance in finding resources, if needed. You also may call 404-471-6096 for assistance or email a question.
To facilitate the on-site use of materials we provide photocopy machines (which cost ten cents per page and accept $1 and $5 bills).
