IM a Librarian Service FAQ

1. What is Instant Messaging?
Instant Messaging is a form of electronic communication that uses software such as AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and Yahoo! Messenger to exchange text-based messages between two or more people in real-time.

2. What is a screen name?
A screen name is a name that you choose to identify yourself online when instant messaging with others. You will need to establish a screen name with one of the supported Instant Messaging services before you can log in and chat with a librarian. (If you do not want to create a screen name, you can submit a question to a librarian using our Ask a Librarian Online service.) Visit one of these sites to create a screen name of your own:

2. Where can I get Instant Messaging software?
There are several instant messaging options to choose from, McCain Library IM a Librarian supports the AOL and Yahoo!. Both are available for free. You can choose to download them (if you're using your home or work computer) or view them via the web (if you're on campus).

4. Can I use IM if the computer I'm using doesn't have Instant Messaging software installed?
Yes, you can! If you're using a computer that doesn't have instant messaging software installed or you do not want to install it, you can log into your AIM or Yahoo! account via Meebo.
