Finding Full-Text

If the database you are searching does not include the full-text of your article, search the Journal/Article Locator. Enter the journal title (not the article title!) to see if your article is available in full-text in a different database.

The journal locator will also tell you if we have a journal in the McCain print or microfilm collections. Double-check by searching in SOPHIA for the journal title (not the article title!).

If we don't own the journal, you can request the article through Interlibrary Loan, or, check to see if another local library owns it.

Book Reviews

When searching for book reviews, it is important to know the title, author and publication date if you are looking for a specific book. Be sure to use a database or printed index that covers the appropriate time period. Otherwise, you can often search by subject or topic, and then select to filter out only book reviews in the advanced search of most databases.

For example, in Historical Abstracts, select the Advanced Search tab, then click "Book Review" on the drop down menu next to Document Type.

In JSTOR, select Advanced Search. Use the search fields at the top of the screen to enter Author or Title or Keywords to search. In the section

Narrow Your Search To:
These Types: check the box next to Review

To select a specific journal or one or more disciplines, use the options

These Journal Title(s):

or

These Discipline(s) and/or Journal(s):

Project Muse also has books reviews. Use the Advanced Search and enter Author or Title or Keywords in the search fields at the top of the screen. Use the Limit Search: By Type: and select Review from the drop down list.

For older books, you may need to use printed indexes, for example:

Book review digest. New York: The H. W. Wilson company.
Ref. Z1219 .C95 1905 - 1979

Book review index. Detroit, Gale Research Co.
Ref. Z1035.A1 B6 1965 - 2000

Index to book reviews in the humanities. Williamston, Mich.: P. Thomson.
