The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

(Book jacket from http://www.amazon.com, 3/31/08)

Incoming Agnes Scott students will be reading The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi as part of ASC 101 in the Fall of 2008. The book, which also has been adapted into the animated movie Persepolis, and nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, is a graphic memoir about Satrapi’s coming of age during Iran's Islamic revolution of 1979. Satrapi, an intelligent, outspoken only child, the daughter of radical Marxists and the great-granddaughter of Iran's last emperor, bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country.

Originally published to wide critical acclaim in France, The Complete Persepolis vividly dramatizes the contradictions between private and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval. It tells the story of Satrapi’s high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming, both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar—a young life bound up with the tumultuous history of Iran, yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up.

To support this campus-wide common reading, McCain Library has compiled a bibliography featuring the book, journal articles and online resources. The bibliography also features other books by the author, books on women in Iran and the Middle East, and books and articles about the genre of graphic narratives, all available in the McCain Library collection. As part of our campus discussion of The Complete Persepolis, the college will be hosting a visit by Scott McCloud, author of Understanding Comics, who will be at Agnes Scott on September 16 and 17, 2008. McCloud is a practicing graphic artist, and he will give a public lecture on graphic narratives (with a focus on The Complete Persepolis) on September 16. McCloud’s books and his web site can be found in the “Books, Articles and Web Sites on Graphic Narratives” section of the bibliography.
